DVD (and Related) Links

The following websites are not just s blind list of links. They were picked from among the scores of sites out there devoted to DVD's, home theater, and related topics, because they had some very valuable content. Almost all the sites were also designed with care so that they are legible, nicely organized, etc. which makes them that much easier to use and fun to peruse.

If there is a site out there (perhaps you are the one who created and maintains it) which is not listed, I would be happy to visit your site and possibly list it if I think it contains some decent content - just send me a note at levi@dvdmon.com. I am still searching the web for new sites to link, so if yours is not here, it is simply because I haven't gotten to it yet! Likewise, if you maintain a site that is listed here, I would be grateful if you were to also link to DVDMON.com.

  • The Digital Bits - A old stalwart of DVD sites on the web, The Digital Bits is still going strong. It is headed by Bill Hunt, someone who seems to have a lot of insider connections (he's also a screenwriter, I believe), aside from the standard assortment of editorials, current industry happenings, etc., he covers many of the DVD-related conferences and exhibitions where he has interviewed major players in the industry.

  • RateItAll - Ever since Deja.com died, I've been looking for a site that allows consumers to rate various things. I just found RateItAll, which really does rate it ALL! You'll find Electronics like DVD players, TV's, etc., as well as many other things like schools, politicians, software, etc.

  • The DVD File - I would say that this is arguably the best all-around DVD site out there, truly professional in design and content, it also has daily news and views, reviews (both of hardware and software), contests, online petitions, Discussion forum, polls, live chat, Beginners DVD Web Guide, and an extensive list of links. If I had to only use one DVD site, this would be it!

  • DVD Basin - This great site, which is both in German and English, is the world's largest DVD review database with links to over 50,000 reviews of over 20,000 DVD releases.

  • Twice.com - TWICE stands for This Week In Consumer Electronics. The site is an archive of articles on everything from cell phones to the DVD industry. It's not fluffy but rather goes into a lot of hard technical details about the industry and the different technologies involved. There's an online calendar of expos and conventions, surveys, job classifieds, sales statistics, plus you can sign up for a free print version of their magazine.

  • The Big Picture - The Big Picture has lots of reviews, a discussion forum, lots of news updates - multiple times during the day, surveys, contests, etc. I think their strongest points, though are their reviews and their news updates.

  • The DVD Answer Man - This site's main content is it's good number of DVD reviews by the site creator.

  • Digital Widescreen - Boasting a great news section updated daily, cover art from upcoming DVD's, and some great primers to DVD and related issues, plus a growing section of reviews, this site is a very nice resource.

  • Bargainflix - Bargainflix is mainly geared towards getting the cheapest prices on DVD's. It lists the multitude of coupons and special discounts from online retailers. It does a great job of keeping current on all of these so that you as the consumer doesn't have to track them down. You can also compare prices on DVD's from a whole bunch of etailers to find the cheapest prices. However, the site also has a lot more, including a Discussion Forum, DVD Reviews and DVD Contests.

  • DVD Amigos - Though this site is designed for Internet Explorer only, it offers a good deal of DVD news and reviews, an active DVD Discussion Forum, a collection on upcoming DVD cover art, and more

  • DVD Angle - DVD Angle has many of the same things that you see on many other sites including this one - Reviews, Editorials, and News. In addition to having outstanding content in these areas, it also has a bunch of features that I have yet to see anywhere else. One of these is the DVD Timeline, which is a "chronicle of every major event in the history of DVD," a page dedicated to DVD "easter eggs" (hidden features), printable cover art, and lots more.

  • DVD Authority - "We do reviews, period." - or at least one part of the site says this. And boy, do they do reviews! There are over 600 high-quality DVD reviews with feature checklists and ratings. But it's unfair to say that this is all they do - they also have contests and an albeit not heavily used discussion forum.

  • DVD Tracker - An interesting idea for a site, DVD Tracker lets you create an account with them so that you can set up your own database of DVD's that you own, want to own, want to sell, etc. You can have this list be viewable to other members so that members could potentially search for everyone who owned a particular title to see if they wanted to sell it, or perhaps with questions about the DVD that they couldn't find answers to elsewhere. I tried setting up my own record, but found I didn't have the patience to type in all of my DVD's ;-)

  • DVDLink - This is probably the biggest database of DVD-related links I've seen on the net. It covers every conceivable category and covers US, UK, and European sites.

  • General Home Theater Advince/Info - This is a great site to peruse to if you want to understand all the basics of home theater, plus news relating to it. If you are just starting out with a home theater, or even if you have had one for a while but were curious about the details that go into making an optimal one, this is a great site. It's well-organized and well-laid out as opposed to bombarding you with an unreadable amount of information so that you do not no where to go first!

  • eMedia Live - A free online magazine featuring news and info about DVD and related industries, hardware reviews and more. Great site for keeping up to date with the industry's news.

  • digitallyObsessed.com - A nicely designed site, digitallyObsessed.com features many great reviews, DVD and general entertainment news, contests, columns and interviews, and a special area devoted to movie news and reviews for kids, plus much more.

  • DVD Price Search - I believe this was the first of the DVD price-search engines out there. It lets you combine multiple DVD's in your searches, plus lists all the various coupons and special offers on the web. They currently have a large number of online retailers in their database - 27 to be exact! If not the best, then one of the best sites out there for getting the best deal on your online DVD purchase!

  • DVD Channel News - This site is one of the older ones out there, coming up on its 3-year anniversary. There is so much content on this site, I'm a bit overwhelmed. I think part of the confusion is that there are so many ways to get to the info. Despite my design issues with the site, it does have some great stuff - rumors, reviews, a discussion forum, editorials, a glossary, DVD cover art, and a lot more!

  • DVD Future - A nicely organized list of links, though perhaps not what people go to a site for, is one of the nicest features on DVD Future. There are also a growing number of DVD reviews, plus news and views on the DVD industry, and related consumer electronics like gaming consoles and digital TV

  • The DVD Journal - Lots of reviews - both "quick" smaller reviews and full-blown ones, a great upcoming DVD release Calendar, a list of discontinued ("MIA") DVD's, a thorough DVD Lexicon, a comprehensive list of sales stats and continually updated news and commentary are just some of the many features that make this DVD site stand out among this admittedly crowded group!

  • DVD Review - Their name says it all. Probably at least 500 full-featured reviews on their, with pictures from the movies to boot, make this a definite place to go for DVD reviews. However, there is much, much more to this site outside of reviews! DVD Myths, a great page on site member's run-in with stars, with pictures, and a compiled list of all DVD's with certain features (THX, DTS, Flippers, etc.), are just some of the multitude of resources this great site has.

  • DVD Sewer - A fairly active discussion forum is the standout feature on this site, though the site also contains some DVD reviews as well as new release news.

  • DVD Shrine - DVD Shrine has many nicely done DVD reviews, with ratings, stats, even screenshots of scenes and menus. In addition, there are regular weekly columns and a fairly active discussion forum, contests, and new release news.

  • DVD Verdict - This site has over 500 DVD reviews, almost a dozen player reviews, a very popular discussion forum on home theater, a nicely compiled links section, lots of news, some interesting editorials, and the list just goes on! Lots of great info and reviews and a very nicely laid-out site to boot!

  • DVD Web - A British site, DVD Web offers DVD news and reviews for both region 1 and region 2, has an active discussion forum, and some great information about DVD technology and home theater in general.

  • DVD Town - Around 500 reviews, tons of news, and a nicely designed site are some of the standouts here.

  • Widescreen Review - Though not specifically a DVD site, Widescreen Review does boast an enormous number of DVD Reviews (though I had some problems searching them). Lots of news, equipment reviews, and a discussion forum also make this site a great resource.

  • The Canadian DVD Users Group - A number of forums, news relating to Canadian distribution of DVD's, live chat, easter eggs, and quite a few full-featured reviews make this a nice resource for Canadians or anyone for that matter.

  • Adult DVD Talk - One of the few non-commercial sites out their for Adult DVD's, this site has lots of resources for this genre, including, a price-search mechanism for finding bargains on online retail sites, a discussion forum, live chat, and news.

  • The New Digital Reporter - A great site for in-debth coverage of all the DVD and related conferences, expos, trade shows, etc., with lots of great pictures, and a nice personal approach.

  • DVD Profiler - Not really a DVD website, but rather a site dedicated to a software program called DVD Profiler, which lets you compile a list of DVD's, downloads the data off the web, and generally offers a great tool for those of us who write reviews, or just want a quick display of a DVD specs!

  • eCoustics - A great reference and review site for everything having to deal with home theater, including DVD players, TV's, Audio, etc. It's laid out in a super-organized way, very much like Yahoo, and comes up extremely quickly, so it's a pleasure to use in addition to having tons of useful information!

  • Home Theater Talk - Home theater talk is centered around a very active discussion forum, but also features hardware reviews, and articles/editorials. It is geared probably more for the hardcore (eg technical) home theater aficionado.

  • Yanman on the Web - Yanman has just an incredible amount of great content on his site, including around 200 DVD reviews, home theater info, news and rumors, a discussion forum, and even "Dinner and a DVD" a play on the cable "Dinner and a movie" where he reviews a DVD and also gives a great recipe!

  • DVD Corner - DVD Corner is simple, straightforward site with a good selection of well-written DVD reviews (around 100), plus regular news about the industry.

  • DVD Special (Russian) - There is a great interest in DVD's in Russia if the offering of Russian DVD websites is any indication. DVD Special is one of their top sites. It's extremely slick with tons of news, reviews, links and more. There are other Russian sites I could list but since DVDMON.com is geared mainly towards English speakers, I will leave this as the prime example of a Russian DVD site and you can follow the links on DVD Special to find others.

  • Digtial Eyes - A reportedly very good online retailer of DVD's, they also sell used DVD's in addition to new ones. In addition to their store, a key feature on their site is reviews by Obi, who many believe is the best online reviewer of movies.

  • The Cinema Laser - Over 500 reviews, industry news, and lots of great information make this site a great resource. In addition, there are a lot of DVD activism pages devoted to getting certain movies released on DVD, getting more titles out in anamorphic widescreen, etc. Definitely a place to go if you are passionate about this technology!

  • Anime on DVD - A tremendous resource for anyone interested in Anime on DVD. Countless reviews, feature articles and news make this one of the most content-rich sites out there Anime-related or just DVD-related. Makes me wish they covered non-Anime DVD's too!

  • DVD Adept - This site contains a decent amount of DVD-related info, a well-populated discussion forum, dvd price comparisons and more.

  • DVD Hunt - DVD Hunt is basically a dicussion forum devoted to trading, buying, and selling, DVD's and audio/video equipment.

  • DVD Talk - Over 700 DVD reviews, a very active discussion, DVD News, DVD price search, feature articles and FAQ's are just some of the enormous number of features this great site offers. And now the DVD Savant is hosted here, formerly part of the now defunct DVD Resource Page.

  • The Home Theater Forum - This is THE discussion forum that I go to first when I want to hear what the current buzz is about DVD's, home theater, or other related topics, or to pose questions for the scores of experts and afficianados who traffic this site. They also have a good collection of reviews and and regular live chats with studio reps, directors, producers, and many others in the industry!

  • Internet Movie Database - The mother of all movie sites on the web, this was started as a internet community project, it was eventually bought by Amazon and so has taken on a more professional, slick appearance, albeit a bit more commercial. Any question you might have about any movie, actor, director, etc. that you can think of you will either find the answer to it here, or at least a link to a site that does have the answer!

  • Binary Flix - This site has a vast array of virtual DVD menus. By this I mean you can view the entire menu for a given DVD with screen captures of each menu page. Really interesting! In addition they have lots of DVD news.
